What a lattice patio cover does well

What a lattice patio cover does well

A lattice patio cover is a grid of slats set over beams, so sunlight breaks into strips of shade before it reaches you. Air keeps moving through the roof, and the room inside your house stays brighter than it would under a solid roof. Lattice covers appear in our own project photos.

Open lattice is at its best over spaces you use on dry, sunny days: a lounge set, a lawn edge, a walkway or a planter bed. Plants and vines can climb it too, if you want a greener look over time.

Lattice density: how much shade you get

Lattice density: how much shade you get

The spacing and size of the slats decide how the patio feels at 3 p.m. in August. Closer spacing and taller slats throw more shade. Wider spacing lets in more sun and sky.

  • Open spacing keeps the space bright and works over seating that gets afternoon shade from the house.
  • Tighter spacing cuts more glare over a west facing yard or a spot with no trees.
  • Slat direction matters too. The way the slats run relative to the afternoon sun changes how much light slips between them.

A good lattice layout starts with your yard’s orientation, so the shade lands where you sit once the cover is up.

Lattice-solid patio covers: solid where you sit

Lattice-solid patio covers: solid where you sit

Many homeowners want both shelter and light. Combination lattice-solid patio covers solve that with a solid section over the table or lounge and open lattice beyond it, or lattice wings on either side. You stay dry and shaded where you spend the most time, and the edges of the patio still feel open.

This mix also helps the house. A solid section next to the wall can keep rain away from a slider, while lattice farther out lets daylight reach your windows.

Wood grain or extruded aluminum lattice

Wood grain or extruded aluminum lattice

Our lattice is aluminum, our specialty, which matters on a roof made of dozens of thin slats: there is nothing to rot, warp or repaint slat by slat. The choice is mostly about texture:

  • Wood grain embossed aluminum (Duralum). Slats with a pressed grain that gives the lattice a traditional look on ranch and Craftsman style homes.
  • Extruded aluminum (4K Aluminum). Sharp, even slats that make a tidy pattern of shade on a contemporary house.
  • A mix. Extruded beams can carry wood grain lattice on top.

For finishes and coastal care, see our page on aluminum patio covers.

Attached or freestanding lattice

Attached or freestanding lattice

Attached lattice ties into the house, so the filtered shade starts right at the back door and can keep glare off nearby windows. Lattice on its own posts lets you shade a garden bench or a lounge spot with no connection to the house. Your eave height and the spot you want to shade usually point to the right choice.

When lattice is the wrong choice

When lattice is the wrong choice

Lattice lets rain through. If you want to eat outside during a winter storm, protect outdoor furniture, or mount a ceiling fan and lights, open lattice is not the answer. Go solid, or choose an insulated patio cover for a cooler, quieter roof that can carry wiring.

Still comparing styles? Our overview of patio covers in Orange County lays out every roof type we build. When you are ready, contact Ocean Pacific Patios or call (949) 525-1267 to talk through your yard.

I recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

We did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

John and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, high quality patio cover at a fair price, this is the company to use. Construction manager John Haynes handled all our design needs in a very professional manner. Tony and the install crew really know their stuff too.

After several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

My wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

By far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

We decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Still deciding? Call us and we will talk it through.

Call (949) 525-1267
Does a lattice patio cover keep the rain off?

No. Rain falls through the open slats, so a lattice roof is for sun control, not weather protection. If you need a dry spot, we build lattice-and-solid combinations with a solid section over your seating, or you can go with a fully solid or insulated roof.

How much shade does a lattice roof give?

It depends on slat spacing, slat height and the direction the slats run. Tighter spacing blocks more sun, and wider spacing keeps the patio brighter. Check where the afternoon sun hits your yard before choosing, so the shade lands where you sit.

Can you put a lattice on top of a pergola?

Yes, adding lattice above open beams is a common way to get more shade from a pergola style frame. The frame has to be planned for the extra slats. If you are starting fresh, ask us about planning the lattice and the frame together in aluminum.

What are some good ideas for patio cover roofs?

Match the roof to how you use the space. Open lattice suits lounging and gardens, a lattice-solid combination suits dining with open edges, and a solid or insulated roof suits year round use with fans and lights. If the cover is a focal point, a gabled shape is another option to ask about.

Do I need a permit to build a lattice patio cover in California?

Often, yes. An open lattice roof does not by itself exempt a cover from review, since cities look at the structure, not only the roof. Rules differ by city, so check with your city's building department before you build.

How much does a lattice patio cover cost?

Price follows size, material, slat spacing, whether part of the roof is solid, and whether the cover is attached or freestanding. Footings and your city's plan review also play a part. For a number based on your patio, Request a Quote.
