Westminster patio covers start with the roof line

Westminster patio covers start with the roof line

Much of Westminster was built out as tract housing after World War II, and many houses are single-story tract homes with a slab patio behind a sliding door. That layout suits a cover, but one design question comes first: how high can the new roof sit?

A one-story house often has a low eave. If the cover simply hangs off the fascia, the far edge can end up lower than you want, and the space under it feels tight.

When the back of the house has been added onto

When the back of the house has been added onto

Many Westminster homes have been remodeled or extended over the years. A family room addition, an enclosed porch or a new slider can leave the back wall with two different eave heights, or with a newer section built differently from the original house.

That changes the plan for the cover:

  • Attach to one section only. The cover ties into the part of the house with the taller, sounder eave, and posts carry the rest.
  • Step the cover. Two connected roof sections follow the two eave heights, so neither side feels cramped.
  • Stand it apart. A freestanding cover on its own posts sits just off the house and avoids the mismatch entirely.

This is one reason similar looking tract homes rarely end up with identical covers. The slab, the drainage and the eave all vary from house to house, so we measure first and design second.

Keeping the family room bright

Keeping the family room bright

On a single-story house, the room behind the slider is often the first thing a new cover darkens. Placing the roof types with that in mind keeps the inside bright and the patio shaded.

A lattice section closest to the windows lets daylight through where it matters most. A solid or insulated section farther out shades the table and keeps it dry in winter rain. Insulated panels have a foam core, so the seating area stays cooler on a sunny afternoon.

Aluminum that looks like wood, or reads as modern

Aluminum that looks like wood, or reads as modern

Aluminum is our specialty for patio cover installation in Westminster and every other city we serve. For a classic look, we use wood grain embossed aluminum from Duralum, which suits a ranch style house and never needs repainting like real lumber.

For a cleaner, more current line, we use extruded aluminum from 4K Aluminum. Some homeowners combine both in one cover, such as wood grain beams over a crisp extruded frame. Our patio covers Orange County page shows each roof style in more detail.

From Little Saigon to the 405

From Little Saigon to the 405

Westminster is best known for Little Saigon, the business and cultural district along Bolsa Avenue. Around it, and on both sides of the 405, are blocks of tract homes with similar lot shapes and similar backyards.

Westminster sits a few miles in from the ocean, so gray marine layer mornings are common. By mid afternoon, a west or south facing patio can get plenty of sun.

Plan review with the City of Westminster

Plan review with the City of Westminster

Westminster runs its own building division, and patio cover plans for homes inside city limits generally go through it. The size of the cover, how it attaches and how close it sits to property lines all play a part.

One local wrinkle: Midway City sits inside Westminster’s borders but is unincorporated, so homes there go through the County of Orange instead. We go over what the right office will look for before a build date is set.

If you want lighter shade and a more architectural feel, an aluminum pergola may suit your yard better than a covered roof. See our pergolas page to compare the two, then contact Ocean Pacific Patios to talk through your Westminster project.

I recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

We did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

John and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

After several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

My wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

By far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

We decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Call (949) 525-1267
Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Westminster?

In most cases, plan for one. Homes inside Westminster city limits go through the city building division, which looks at cover size, attachment and setbacks. Call the city with your address and rough design before you settle on the final plan.

Will a patio cover make my living room darker?

It can, especially on a single-story home with a low eave. A raised attachment, a lattice roof near the windows, or a cover set slightly away from the house all let more daylight reach the room behind the slider.

How much does a 12x20 patio cover cost?

It depends on the roof you pick, whether it is insulated, wood grain or extruded aluminum, how it attaches to the eave, the footings and city plan review. A stepped or split design also changes it. We measure the patio and then quote your exact design.

Can a patio cover attach to a room addition?

Often, yes, if the fascia and framing on that section are sound. When the addition and the original house have different eave heights, a stepped cover or a freestanding cover on its own posts can avoid an awkward joint.

Which roof suits a west facing Westminster patio?

West facing patios take the strongest late day sun. A solid or insulated roof over the seating area blocks that glare, while a lattice strip near the windows keeps the room inside from going dark.

Do you build pergolas in Westminster too?

Yes. We build modern aluminum pergolas, including designs with louvered or slatted roofs and privacy screens. A pergola gives filtered shade and an open look, while a patio cover gives steadier shade and rain protection.
