Why aluminum makes sense near the coast

Why aluminum makes sense near the coast

Aluminum does not rot, gives termites nothing to eat and never needs restaining. For homes within reach of the ocean, where salt air and the morning marine layer keep surfaces damp, that low upkeep matters. A metal pergola also keeps its straight lines, so beams do not twist or sag the way long wood spans can.

Our own project photos show modern black and white frames, some with slatted louvered roofs and privacy screens. The design is sized to your yard, not pulled from a kit.

Two kinds of aluminum, used alone or together

Two kinds of aluminum, used alone or together

  • Extruded aluminum from 4K Aluminum: beams and posts formed into crisp, square profiles. It gives the clean look of a modern frame.
  • Wood grain embossed aluminum from Duralum Products Inc: the surface carries an embossed grain and a warm wood color, for a softer, more traditional look.
  • Both in one design: extruded posts and beams paired with wood grain rafters give you a modern frame with a softer top.
Metal pergola with roof or open rafters?

Metal pergola with roof or open rafters?

Open rafters are the classic choice for filtered shade. If you need more, there are three common ways to add cover:

  • Lattice across the rafters for softer, even shade.
  • Louvered slats set at an angle for deeper shade and a modern line.
  • Solid or insulated panels for a metal roof pergola that blocks sun and rain.

A metal roof on a pergola changes how the whole frame is built. Solid panels add weight and shed rain, so post size, beam span, footings and drainage are planned around the roof from the start. If you want an aluminum pergola with roof panels, tell us at the first visit so the structure is designed for it.

Picking a color and finish

Picking a color and finish

Black and white frames suit modern and contemporary homes. Wood tones fit Spanish, ranch and craftsman styles. Match the frame to your window trim, gutters and fascia so the new structure looks like it was always part of the house.

Options

Frame, roof and finish options

Mix frame, roof and finish to suit your home and how much shade you want.

Modern extruded frame

Square extruded beams and slim posts in black or white for a crisp, contemporary look.

Wood grain aluminum

Duralum embossed wood grain gives a warm timber look that will not rot, crack or need stain.

Louvered slat roof

Angled slats across the top cut more direct sun than open rafters while keeping air moving.

Solid or insulated roof

Roof panels that block sun and rain for a dry spot over a dining table or outdoor kitchen.

Freestanding frame

Four or more posts of its own, so it can sit over a spa, pool deck or lawn away from the house.

Privacy screen panels

Slatted side panels that hide a neighbor's view or block low sun on one side of the patio.

I recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

We did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

John and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

After several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

My wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

By far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

We decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Still deciding? Call us and we will talk it through.

Call (949) 525-1267
Is an aluminum pergola cheaper than wood?

Not always on day one. Price depends on size, roof and the wood species you compare against. Where aluminum pulls ahead is the years after: no restaining, no termite treatment and no rotted post bases to replace, so weigh the total cost of owning it.

How much weight can an aluminum pergola hold?

It depends on beam size, span, post spacing and roof type, and the building code your city enforces sets the load rules. A pergola is built for its roof, lights and fans, not for people or storage on top. Tell us what you plan to hang so we design for it.

Can you put a lattice on top of a pergola?

Yes. Lattice can run across the rafters for softer, more even shade. It is planned into the design so the spacing and color match the frame, and it suits patios where open rafters let in too much afternoon sun.

Can I get a custom size pergola made?

Yes. We size each design to your space, setting post spacing, height and overhang around your doors, furniture and view. The aluminum is cut to that plan, so you are not limited to the fixed sizes of a store kit.

Does aluminum rust near the ocean?

Aluminum does not rust the way steel does, which is a big reason it suits coastal homes. Salt air can still leave a film on any finish, so rinsing the frame with fresh water a few times a year keeps the color looking clean.
