Santa Ana pergola installation from next door
Santa Ana borders Costa Mesa, where our base on Sturgeon Dr sits. Being that close makes the measuring visit, design meetings and build days easy to fit around your week.
A pergola is an open beam structure: it shades and frames a space rather than sealing it off from the sky. In Santa Ana, homeowners often use one to turn a plain side yard or the back of a deep lot into a place to sit, eat or garden.

A pergola that fits an older Santa Ana home
Much of Santa Ana was built well before the newer master-planned cities nearby. Its older neighborhoods hold Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival homes, and mid-century ranch houses fill much of the rest of the city.
A pergola on a house like that should look like it belongs. A few choices make the difference:
- Wood grain aluminum gives the warm look of painted or stained timber, which suits bungalow and Spanish style trim.
- Simple beam ends keep the design calm next to detailed porches and windows.
- Post height and spacing matched to existing eaves keep the roof line in proportion.

Freestanding pergolas for deeper lots
Some Santa Ana lots run deeper than the tract lots in newer cities, with room for a lawn, fruit trees and a separate seating area. A freestanding pergola stands on its own posts in the middle of that space, so it can frame a fire pit, an outdoor table or a vegetable garden away from the house.
On a narrow city lot, an attached pergola off the back door often makes more sense, since it uses the house wall for support.

Choosing the roof: open beams, lattice or louvered slats
The roof decides how much shade you get:
- Open beams give a light, airy frame and soft shade that moves through the day.
- Lattice lays a tighter crosshatch over the beams for steadier filtered shade.
- A louvered (slatted) roof uses closely spaced slats for the most shade an open pergola can give.
Our project photos include modern black and white aluminum pergolas with slatted roofs and privacy screens. We build with Duralum wood grain aluminum and 4K Aluminum extrusions; see the full range on our main pergolas page.

Inland summers and wood upkeep
Summers in Santa Ana are hotter and drier than along the coast in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach. Real wood dries, checks and fades under that sun, and it needs regular sealing to stay sound.
Aluminum will not rot or split, termites ignore it, and its finish needs little more than an occasional rinse.

Pergola, patio cover or both
A pergola gives filtered shade, but it will not keep a table dry in the rain. If you need full cover, read about our patio covers in Santa Ana, which use solid, lattice or insulated roofs. Some yards get both: full cover off the back door and an open pergola over the garden.

Getting started
Call (949) 525-1267 or send us your project details with snapshots of the space. We measure, sketch the layout and roof style with you and talk through the city’s requirements. After the build, we look over the finished pergola together.

Posted on GoogleI recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

Posted on GoogleWe did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

Posted on GoogleJohn and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

Posted on GoogleAfter several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

Posted on GoogleMy wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

Posted on GoogleBy far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

Posted on GoogleWe decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Still deciding? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (949) 525-1267Do aluminum pergolas need much upkeep in Santa Ana's sun?
Very little. Aluminum does not rot, warp or draw termites, and the finish usually needs only an occasional rinse with a hose. Real wood, by contrast, needs regular sealing or staining to hold up to hot, dry inland summers.
Will an aluminum pergola suit an older Santa Ana home?
It can. Wood grain embossed aluminum from Duralum looks like painted or stained timber, which suits Craftsman and Spanish style homes. We keep beam ends simple and match post height to your eaves so the pergola looks like part of the house.
Do I need city approval for a pergola in Santa Ana?
Santa Ana reviews plans for many patio structures, and what applies depends on the size, height and whether the pergola attaches to the house. Homes in historic districts may face extra review. We go over the city's requirements with you during planning.
How much shade does a pergola give?
It depends on the roof. Open beams give light, moving shade, a lattice top gives steadier filtered shade, and a louvered (slatted) roof gives the most. None of them stops rain, so pick a solid patio cover if you need dry space.
What colors do your aluminum pergolas come in?
Our project photos show modern black and white aluminum pergolas, and we also build with wood grain embossed aluminum for a timber look. We help you pick a color that suits your trim, roof and the style of your Santa Ana home.
Should my pergola be attached or freestanding?
Attached pergolas suit narrow lots because the house carries one side, leaving more open yard. Freestanding pergolas suit deeper Santa Ana lots, where you can place shade over a fire pit, table or garden away from the house.
