Why homeowners choose a glass patio enclosure

Why homeowners choose a glass patio enclosure

A covered patio handles sun and rain, but it does nothing about the afternoon wind. Near the coast, an ocean breeze can push napkins off the table and send everyone indoors by sunset. Glass walls stop that air while you still see the garden, the pool or the hills.

Glass also keeps out the fine dust and leaves that blow across a yard. Cushions stay cleaner, the floor needs less sweeping, and the table is ready to use. You can see glass walls added under aluminum covers in our project photos.

It stays a patio

It stays a patio

A glass enclosed patio is still a patio. The floor is usually the slab or pavers you already have, the furniture is outdoor furniture, and the space can open back up to the yard. That is the main difference from a sunroom, which is planned and finished as an indoor room.

How a glass enclosed patio is put together

How a glass enclosed patio is put together

The first piece is the roof: the cover you already have, if it can carry walls, or a new aluminum cover. Framing runs between the posts and glass fills each opening. Ask how your openings would be framed and how the glass meets the floor.

Our covers are built from wood grain embossed aluminum by Duralum Products Inc and extruded aluminum by 4K Aluminum. We finish the frames to match the cover above them.

Fixed glass or panels that open

Fixed glass or panels that open

Some glass enclosures use fixed panels only. Others include panels that slide or swing open, so the walls can be pulled back on a warm afternoon and closed again when the breeze picks up. We install both sliding and swinging opening panels, so each side of the patio can get the style that suits it.

A common layout keeps fixed glass on the windiest side and puts opening panels where people walk in and out. The space then works as a windbreak in the morning and an open patio by lunch.

Glass options

Glass options

You do not need a spec sheet to pick glass. We install tempered safety glass, with tinted and low-E options:

  • Tempered safety glass. Breaks into small pieces instead of sharp shards, a sensible choice where kids and pets move around.
  • Clear glass. The most open view, often used on walls that face shade or the garden.
  • Tinted glass. Can cut glare on a wall that takes direct afternoon sun.
  • Low-E glass. A coated glass meant to limit the heat coming through.

Before you choose, note which wall faces west, where the neighbors sit and what you want to see from your chair.

Glass enclosure or glass sunroom?

Glass enclosure or glass sunroom?

From the yard they can look alike, but they solve different problems. An enclosure keeps your patio outdoors in feel: patio floor, patio furniture and walls that can open. A glass sunroom is a room addition with an insulated roof and a finished interior, meant to be used like the rest of the house.

If you want a sheltered glass patio room for breezy evenings, the enclosure is usually the better fit. If you want a year round room you furnish like the living room, compare the sunroom.

Glass or screen walls?

Glass or screen walls?

A screen patio enclosure uses mesh instead of glass. Screens keep bugs out and let every breeze through, which suits warm inland yards. Glass makes more sense when the problem is wind, dust or a chilly evening rather than mosquitoes. The patio enclosures overview compares every wall style side by side.

Permits for enclosing a patio

Permits for enclosing a patio

Walls change how a city looks at a patio cover, so a glass enclosure may get a different review than the open cover did. Rules are not the same in every Orange County city, so call your city’s building department early and bring the design along when you ask.

I recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

We did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

John and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, high quality patio cover at a fair price, this is the company to use. Construction manager John Haynes handled all our design needs in a very professional manner. Tony and the install crew really know their stuff too.

After several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

My wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

By far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

We decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Still deciding? Call us and we will talk it through.

Call (949) 525-1267
Can my existing patio cover take glass walls?

Yes, if the cover overhead is built to carry walls. Glass panels add weight, so the posts, beams and footings need to be sound and placed where the openings will be. If your current cover cannot take walls, a new cover can be planned with the enclosure.

Will my city review a glass patio enclosure?

Often, yes. Once a covered patio has walls, a city may look at it differently than an open cover. Each Orange County city has its own requirements, so ask your city's building department before the design is final.

How much does a glass patio enclosure cost?

The price depends on the size of each opening, whether any panels open, the glass type, the frame and whether your current cover can be reused. City requirements and site access matter too. We measure the patio and give you an exact quote.

How is a glass enclosure different from a sunroom?

An enclosure keeps the patio a patio: it adds glass walls under a cover, keeps outdoor furniture and can open back up to the outdoors. A sunroom is an addition finished inside and used like any other room of the house.

Will a glass enclosed patio get hot in summer?

It can on a wall that takes direct afternoon sun. The roof above already shades the space at midday, panels that open let hot air out, and tinted or low-E glass can go on the sunniest wall.

Can I still open the space on nice days?

That depends on the panels you choose. Fixed glass stays closed, while sliding or swinging panels can be opened on warm days and closed when the wind or evening chill comes in. We install both kinds, so you can mix them around your patio.
