What makes a glass sunroom different

What makes a glass sunroom different

It is a room addition where most of the wall area is glass and the roof overhead is solid and insulated. You get the light of being outside with the comfort of a finished room you can furnish and use from morning coffee to late dinners.

Inside, it is planned like part of the house, with a door from the home and a ceiling instead of open patio framing. We finish the interior too, with flooring, lighting and a ceiling fan, not just the shell. Sunroom additions appear in our own project photos.

If you are still comparing room types and roof styles, start on our main sunroom page. This page focuses on the glass: how much to use, where it goes and how the room stays comfortable.

How much glass is right for your walls

How much glass is right for your walls

More glass is not always better. The best glass sun room puts clear views where you look most and holds back on the walls that take the harshest sun.

  • North and east walls. Softer light here, so large panels and floor to ceiling glass usually work well.
  • South walls. Strong sun most of the year. Tinted or low-E glass suits this side, and an insulated roof overhang helps keep the room even.
  • West walls. The late afternoon sun is the hottest. Many homeowners use less glass here, or add shades they can drop after lunch.
  • Walls facing a neighbor. Frosted or partial glass keeps the light while giving you privacy.

Note which way each wall faces before the glass layout is drawn, so the room works in July and not only in March.

Keeping a glass room comfortable

Keeping a glass room comfortable

A room full of glass needs a plan for heat and fresh air. These are the tools most people combine:

  • Insulated roof panels. The roof takes the most direct sun, so an insulated panel does much of the work.
  • Sunroom glass choices. Our sunrooms use tempered safety glass, and tinted or low-E panels can cut glare and heat gain while keeping the view.
  • Shades and blinds. Interior shades on the sunny walls let you control the light hour by hour.
  • Ceiling fans. A fan moves air on still afternoons, and we install it and its wiring as part of the project.

Windows and screens for airflow

Windows and screens for airflow

Fixed panels give the cleanest view, but a room that cannot open gets stuffy. We combine fixed sunroom glass panels with windows that slide or swing open. The opening ones get screens so the breeze comes in and the bugs stay out.

Opening windows on opposite walls let cross ventilation pull the ocean air through, a real benefit near the coast in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa.

Glass sunroom or glass patio enclosure?

Glass sunroom or glass patio enclosure?

The difference is what you want the space to be. A glass patio enclosure adds glass walls under a patio cover and stays a patio, with outdoor furniture and walls that can open to the yard.

A sunroom is an indoor room from the start, with its own insulated roof, a finished interior and walls planned around your sun exposure. If you picture a reading room, a dining area or a place to work most of the year, the sunroom is the better fit.

Permits and cost factors

Permits and cost factors

Because a sunroom adds a room to the house, expect your city to review it. Processes differ by city, so contact your building department before the size and layout are final.

Price depends on size, the amount and type of glass, the number of opening windows, the roof, footings, interior finishes and any electrical work. Our sunroom cost guide explains each factor in plain terms.

Options

Choices for your glass room

Features for your view, your sun and how you will use the room.

Floor to Ceiling Glass

Tall panels on your north or east walls bring in soft light and a full view of the yard.

Tinted or Low-E Glass

Tinted or low-E glass on south and west walls cuts glare and heat while keeping the view.

Opening Windows

Windows that slide or swing open, with screens, let a cross breeze move through the room.

Insulated Roof

A solid, insulated roof takes the strongest overhead sun and keeps a glass room usable in summer.

Finished Interior

We put in the flooring, lighting and ceiling fan, and plan the door from the house, so the room feels like part of the home.

I recently had a new solid insulated patio cover installed. My experience with Ocean Pacific Patios was amazing from start to finish. Charlie the Design Consultant was friendly and knowledgeable! Most importantly he was not pushy at all! He answered all my questions without hesitation. The Construction Manager, John, was wonderful too! He had great suggestions and expertise knowledge! Mario and his crew did an excellent job in the demolition of my old cover and installed the new one with precise skills! I have already recommended this company to three people. I have zero complaints!

We did a large front/backyard remodel and pool. John and his team did the Pergolas. Of the three separate contractors we used I would only recommend John. He and his team were professional and the quality was first rate. I really wish I had discovered John before I signed the contract with the main hardscape contractor. John's experience and excellent problem solving skills really saved the project. I highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios.

John and Charlie took on our complicated home patio pavers and drainage project this past fall 2025. It was small, so I was worried it would not be a priority for anyone - but they were prompt, fair, and no-nonsense. Their crews were expedient, knowledgeable and exceeded our expectations. They were patient while we selected just the right paver color, and made suggestions such as some small accent lights that have made a huge difference! Charlie is extremely knowledgeable and helped us to achieve a beautiful result that drains properly. They even helped locate and connect a drain line that was buried under some pavers we had placed years ago, leaving the area looking beautiful! I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios, without reservation. They are the best.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, high quality patio cover at a fair price, this is the company to use. Construction manager John Haynes handled all our design needs in a very professional manner. Tony and the install crew really know their stuff too.

After several bids and proposals with patio cover companies, we decided to go with Ocean Pacific to replace our old dilapidated patio cover. Charlie was informative and fair in presenting his numbers. John, the construction manager, in addition to his expertise in confirming the design details, was very helpful in referring a wood repair man (who did a great job). Demo day went smoothly. The crew was quick and efficient. Installation of the patio cover was spectacular - Hugo and his helper completed the job in one day! They were professional and answered my questions. They cleaned up the back yard after their completion. We are very happy with the patio cover. It turned out beautiful! Thank you, Ocean Pacific.

My wife and I selected Ocean Pacific Patios after receiving several different bids. From the beginning, Charlie came to our home and listened to what we wanted. During this process, Charlie suggested a different option that we had not thought of. He presented us a bid for our option and the new option he offered. We finally decided to go with Charlie’s option. Charlie and John came out for the final design meeting, at which time John made a production drawing of our new patio cover, which really helped tell us we made the right design decision. During the installation John’s crew was very professional and they left the work site clean, when finished. We are very happy with the new patio cover and glad Charlie suggested this option. I would highly recommend Ocean Pacific Patios. Thanks Charlie and John.

By far the EASIEST process it was by working with Charlie Twitch who sealed the deal and outbid 6 other contractors and John Haynes whose expertise made this sunroom exactly to vision. This company is truly the sunroom experts of Orange County. Please trust me when I tell you, my yard was a complete disaster before this and not only did they demo the existing leaking cover which came with the house, but they helped me design the rest of the yard alongside others and were amazing coordinating and masterminding the final outcome. They are honest and treated me like family the entire time. Look no further. I already did the research for you!

We decided to work with John and his team at Ocean Pacific Patio after our due diligence in gathering a number of quotes and design ideas. We do not have a standard patio layout and so it was very important to have the right people who could understand our vision. After meeting with John and going over the details, it was clear to us that he could take us to the finish line with our outdoor patio cover. The build took two days and our space was kept very clean. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is first class. I would definitely recommend Ocean Pacific Patios to anyone who is looking to build their dream patio. Thank you 🙏🏽

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Still deciding? Call us and we will talk it through.

Call (949) 525-1267
What is a glass sunroom?

It is a room added to your house with walls that are mostly glass, a solid insulated roof and a finished interior. It brings in daylight and views, but it is closed against wind, bugs and cool evenings, so you can use it as a real room most of the year.

Do glass sunrooms get too hot?

They can if the glass is planned poorly. Use less glass on west and south walls or choose tinted or low-E glass there, choose an insulated roof, add shades on the sunny side and plan a ceiling fan. Opening windows on opposite walls also let hot air escape.

Does a sunroom need city approval?

Usually. A sunroom adds a room to the house, and city building departments review additions. Requirements and process vary by city, so contact your building department early, before you settle on size and layout.

Should I build a glass sunroom or enclose my patio?

Think indoor versus outdoor. A sunroom is built as part of the house and finished inside, so it suits a dining area, office or reading room. A glass enclosure adds walls to a covered patio and still feels like being outside.

Can the windows in a sunroom open?

They can. Many rooms mix fixed panels for the clearest view with windows that slide or swing open. Opening windows come with screens, and placing them on opposite walls gives the best airflow.

What affects the cost of a glass room addition?

Room size, how much glass you use and what type, the number of opening windows, the roof, footings or a new slab, interior finishes and wiring for fans and lights all change the price. A quote after measuring your space gives you an exact number.
